Consolidate and promote the stable momentum of China US economic and trade relations

From March 15th to 16th local time, China and the United States held economic and trade consultations in Paris, France. Guided by the important consensus reached by the heads of state of China and the United States, the two sides have conducted frank, in-depth, and constructive exchanges and consultations on economic and trade issues of mutual concern, forming some new consensus. They have also agreed to study and establish a cooperation mechanism to promote bilateral trade and investment, and to promote the sustained stability and improvement of bilateral economic and trade relations. The overall stability of the current China US economic and trade relations has not come easily, and should be cherished and consolidated.

We must continue to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state. Since last year, the two heads of state have taken concrete actions and maintained good exchanges at the highest level, providing important strategic guarantees for the improvement and development of China US relations, and also promoting the overall stability of China US relations after ups and downs. The fact has repeatedly proven that the key to the steady progress of China US relations lies in the strategic guidance of the two heads of state. Guided by the consensus of the heads of state, the China US economic and trade consultation mechanism continues to operate, holding talks in multiple cities to gradually resolve differences and accumulate achievements. In the future, both sides should steadfastly follow the direction guided by the consensus of the head of state, fully implement the relevant spirit, adhere to equal consultation, manage differences, and expand cooperation, injecting more certainty into the China US relationship.

We need to take a long-term perspective and calculate the big account of China US economic and trade relations. As the world's top two economies, China and the United States have close economic and trade ties and deeply intertwined interests, so it is inevitable that differences will arise. However, the law of "cooperation brings mutual benefits, while competition harms both" has been repeatedly verified, and "mutual achievement and common development" is also a realistic choice. Both sides should pay more attention to the well-being of the two peoples and global economic stability. They should avoid being confined to short-term issues and not magnify local problems that affect the overall relationship. They should continuously lengthen the list of cooperation and compress the list of problems, so that economy and trade continue to be the ballast and propeller of China US relations, rather than stumbling blocks and conflict points.

The Chinese Two Sessions have just concluded, sending a clear signal to the world to expand high-level opening-up. China has always insisted on providing more new opportunities for cooperation and development for the international community, including the United States. However, the United States has recently introduced negative measures related to China, such as Section 301 investigations, corporate sanctions, and market access restrictions, which may cause interference and damage to the economic and trade relations between China and the United States. The Chinese side is closely monitoring the follow-up progress of these investigations and will take corresponding measures in a timely manner to safeguard China's legitimate rights and interests. Dialogue requires sincerity, while negotiation requires action. We hope that the US side will honor its commitments, view its relations with China with a rational and pragmatic attitude, and work together with China to build a pattern of economic and trade relations that benefits both countries and the world.

The Paris economic and trade talks between China and the United States once again demonstrate that dialogue is more desirable than confrontation, cooperation is more effective than containment, and stability is more in line with common interests than turbulence. A stable and healthy economic and trade relationship between China and the United States is not only related to the development of both countries, but also to the expectations and confidence of the global economy. Both sides should continue to make good use of the economic and trade consultation mechanism, consolidate the hard won results of the current consultations, promote new progress in bilateral economic and trade relations on a stable basis, and better benefit both countries and the world.
