Guangzhou Post Office Customs seized 23 endangered wildlife products

Recently, during the supervision of a batch of inbound mail, customs officers from Guangzhou Post Office under Guangzhou Customs discovered that 8 inbound mail items, all declared as "copper decorations", had abnormal machine inspection images. After unpacking and inspection, the on-site customs officer found several bracelets, necklaces, rings and other accessories in the batch of emails. Among them, some of the accessories are light yellow in color, with the unique "Leeds pattern" of ivory on the surface, suspected to be ivory products; Some of the accessories also have yellow brown spots inside, suspected to be tortoiseshell products.

After being sent to a technical institution for appraisal, it was confirmed that a total of 23 of the above-mentioned accessories are products of endangered wildlife, with a total weight of 112 grams. Among them, 11 are ivory products of modern elephants in the family Elephantidae, and 12 are hawksbill shell products of the family Turtles. Modern elephants and hawksbill turtles are both listed as protected species in the Appendix of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Customs Reminder: According to the provisions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and the Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of Wild Animals, except for legally holding import and export permits and handling customs procedures in accordance with regulations, it is prohibited to trade, carry, or mail endangered wild and living plant species and products into and out of the country. If the circumstances are serious enough to constitute a crime, criminal responsibility will be pursued in accordance with the law.
