BYD's annual sales of pure electric vehicles surpassed Tesla for the first time, becoming the world's largest

Xinhua News Agency, Shenzhen, January 3rd (Reporter Chen Yuxuan) - According to information obtained by the reporter on the 3rd, BYD has surpassed Tesla for the first time in terms of annual sales of pure electric vehicles, becoming the world's top player.

On the same day, reporters learned from BYD that the company sold approximately 4.6 million new energy vehicles in 2025, of which about 2.26 million were pure electric vehicles. According to data released by Tesla, the company delivered approximately 1.63 million vehicles in 2025.

In the fourth quarter of 2023, BYD's pure electric vehicles surpassed Tesla in quarterly sales for the first time, but Tesla still maintained its lead in annual sales.

In 2025, BYD not only expanded its presence in the Chinese market but also increased its overseas sales, achieving a total of over 1.04 million vehicles (including passenger cars and pickups) sold abroad, significantly surpassing the total overseas sales of 2024. The company performed impressively in the European market, actively exploring Latin American and Southeast Asian markets, with its overseas footprint covering over 110 countries and regions, making it one of the fastest-growing Chinese automakers in terms of exports.

Meanwhile, BYD has also intensified its efforts in localized production. Currently, BYD's passenger car assembly plants in Thailand, Uzbekistan, and Brazil have been completed and are in operation, and its first European factory in Hungary is also about to commence production.

According to information from BYD's second extraordinary shareholders' meeting of 2025, held in early December 2025, BYD continues to strengthen its technological leadership and is confident in leading the industry development with more breakthrough technologies in the coming years.

Zhou Fatao, Secretary-General of the Guangdong New Energy Automobile Industry Association, believes that strengthening parts procurement capabilities to enhance price competitiveness and adopting refined sales strategies in overseas markets are important reasons for BYD's significant increase in overseas sales. Its sales volume and market performance indicate that China's role in the global new energy automobile industry is becoming increasingly important, providing higher-quality and diverse choices for global electric vehicle consumers.
