Brazilian Foreign Minister: The US tariffs have no reason to be 'politically motivated'

On the 16th local time, Brazilian Foreign Minister Vieira stated at a press conference that the United States' imposition of a 25% tariff on some Brazilian imports has no practical basis and is "politically motivated".

Vieira stated that the investigation conducted under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act is a unilateral procedure of the US government, and the US has no reason to impose tariffs on Brazilian products. Vieira stated that these measures taken by the United States are "unacceptable".

In addition, Brazilian Vice President Alcmin also stated on the same day that the United States' imposition of a 25% tariff on some Brazilian imports was "unfair and unfounded". Alkmain said that looking at the data over the past 15 years, the United States has maintained a trade surplus with Brazil, and the tax reasons proposed under Section 301 are "completely based on false grounds". Therefore, "the reasons for the US to raise taxes are fundamentally untenable and unfair".

On July 15th local time, the Office of the United States Trade Representative announced that, under the direction of President Trump, Trade Representative Greer is taking final action under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act to impose a 25% tariff on some goods from Brazil.
