Trump says US tariffs on Canadian car and steel imports will increase to 50%

New York, August 24th (Xinhua) - US President Trump announced on social media on the 24th that he will increase import tariffs on Canadian cars, auto parts, and steel products to 50% starting from January 1, 2027.

Trump accuses Canada of "taking advantage of the United States" in trade for many years and says the current situation is unsustainable.

At present, the White House has not issued a formal announcement regarding the tariff measures claimed by Trump.

On July 20th, Trump signed multiple announcements imposing a 50% tariff on hundreds of specific goods imported from Canada, including red wine, hockey sticks, and cement, under Section 338 of the Smoot Hawley Tariff Act. The relevant measures came into effect on the 22nd of this month, but did not involve Canadian automobiles, automotive parts, and steel products.

The US Canada trade negotiations recently failed to reach an agreement. Canadian Prime Minister Carney announced on August 22 that Canada will implement retaliatory tariffs starting from September 8.
