Trump announces postponement of 50% tariff on Canada
New York/Ottawa, August 18 (Xinhua) -- US President Trump announced on the evening of August 18 that he would postpone the imposition of a 50% tariff on Canadian goods for three days. The tariff was originally scheduled to take effect on the 19th Eastern Time, involving approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.
Trump posted on social media "Real Social" that evening, stating that Canada and the United States have reached an agreement and the final document is yet to be finalized. The US will postpone the imposition of a 50% tariff on Canadian goods for three days.
According to Canadian media reports, Canadian Prime Minister Carney called Trump on the evening of the 18th to discuss avoiding US tariffs on Canadian goods.
After the call ended, Dominic LeBlanc, the Canadian government's minister in charge of trade with the United States, further communicated with US Trade Representative Jamison Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik.
On July 20th, Trump signed multiple announcements imposing a 50% tariff on hundreds of specific goods imported from Canada, including red wine, hockey sticks, and cement, under Section 338 of the Smoot Hawley Tariff Act.
