Trump demands to cut off all trade between the United States and Spain, Spain responds
According to Reuters, U.S. President Trump said in a speech with NATO Secretary General Rutte in Türkiye on the 8th that he had asked U.S. Treasury Secretary Vincent Besant to cut off all trade between the United States and Spain, and accused Spain of being a "bad partner" in NATO. The Spanish side subsequently responded with a statement.
According to Al Jazeera in Qatar, the Spanish Prime Minister's office issued a statement in response to Trump's remarks, stating that Madrid will "treat such threats as usual". Our country maintains good social, cultural, and economic relations with the United States, and we have no intention of changing this relationship, "said the Spanish Prime Minister's Office.
Trump has repeatedly targeted Spain. On April 30th, when answering media questions at a White House event, Trump was asked if it was possible to reduce US troops stationed in Italy and Spain. Trump replied, "Yes, very likely." He said that in the US military action against Iran, "Italy didn't help at all," and "Spain's performance was terrible. On March 3rd, Trump also threatened that Spain would not support the United States' attack on Iran and that he intended to cut off all trade with Spain. In response, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez issued a statement on the 4th, reiterating Spain's opposition to the military actions launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, demanding an end to the escalation of the conflict, and stating that it will not change its anti war stance due to fear of retaliation.
