Argentina suspends the legislative process of the Amish trade agreement

Buenos Aires, July 6 (Xinhua) -- The Argentine government stated on the 5th that it will not submit the reciprocal trade and investment agreement signed between Argentina and the United States to Congress for approval in the short term.

On February 5th of this year, the Argentine government announced the signing of a reciprocal trade and investment agreement with the United States. According to the Argentine Constitution, treaties concluded between the Argentine government and other countries and international organizations must be approved by Congress.

According to Argentine media TN TV, the Argentine government stated that the US Supreme Court issued a ruling in February, determining that the US International Emergency Economic Powers Act did not authorize the president to impose large-scale tariffs. This ruling restricts the US President from fulfilling commitments related to tariffs and market access through executive orders, thereby affecting some of the market access provisions in the reciprocal trade and investment agreement between the two countries. The Argentine government has therefore decided that the agreement will not enter the legislative agenda in the near future.
