Senegal think tank: China's non-zero tariff measures are of great significance
Dakar, February 22 (Xinhua) -- Bakari Sambu, director of the Timbuktu Institute, a think tank in Senegal, recently stated in an interview with Moroccan media that China's announcement of zero tariff measures for African countries with diplomatic relations not only promotes African exports to China, but also highlights the deep value of China Africa cooperation in the current international situation.
Sambu believes that this measure will significantly expand the space for African products to enter the Chinese market, and help drive the export of "agricultural products, mineral products, and some manufacturing products" to China.
He pointed out that this move will further "consolidate the important role of the Forum on China Africa Cooperation in China Africa relations" and deepen South South cooperation. Against the backdrop of rising trade protectionism in some Western countries, China has shown a pragmatic attitude of supporting Africa's development by opening up its market with greater force and without political conditions attached.
Sambu emphasized that zero tariffs will also bring opportunities for the development of African industries. If African countries can take this opportunity to enhance product added value, improve logistics and standard systems, it will effectively promote the industrialization process.
He also reminded that the preparation work before policy implementation is crucial, and African governments need to help businesses familiarize themselves with market rules, enhance export capabilities, and effectively transform policy dividends into economic development achievements.
China will fully implement zero tariff measures for 53 African countries that have established diplomatic relations with China starting from May 1, 2026. At the same time, China will continue to promote the signing of economic partnership agreements for common development and further expand the access of African products to China through measures such as upgrading the "green channel".
