Trump sets deadline for EU to fulfill US European trade agreement

New York, May 7th (Xinhua) - US President Trump posted on social media on the 7th that if the EU fails to fulfill the bilateral trade agreement reached with the United States last year by July 4th, tariffs on EU products imported to the US will immediately jump to a higher level.

Trump said that he had a "very good conversation" with European Commission President von der Leyen that day. He also said that the EU has promised to fulfill bilateral trade agreements and reduce tariffs on US products exported to Europe to zero, and he has been patiently waiting for the EU to comply.

On the 1st, Trump threatened through social media that due to the EU's failure to comply with its bilateral trade agreement with the US, the US will raise tariffs on EU car exports to the US from 15% to 25% this week.

The United States and Europe reached a trade agreement in July 2025. Due to tensions between the two sides over the United States' demand for Denmark's autonomous territory of Greenland and the US Supreme Court's ruling that the Trump administration's large-scale tariff policies are illegal, the EU's approval of the agreement has been delayed for several months.

European Parliament members voted on March 26th to support the conditional implementation of the European American trade agreement. On May 5th, the European Commission urged the United States to implement the main provisions of the agreement as soon as possible before the one-year anniversary of its signing at the end of July.
