US threatens not to buy Chinese 'edible oil'? Expert: No practical significance

According to US media reports, US President Trump stated on social media platforms on the 14th that China "deliberately does not purchase US soybeans, causing difficulties for American soybean farmers", which constitutes an "economic hostile act". He added, "We are considering terminating our business dealings with China in the fields of edible oil and other trade as retaliation. For example, we can easily produce edible oil ourselves and we don't need to purchase it from China

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded to relevant inquiries at a regular press conference on the 15th, stating that China's position on handling Sino US economic and trade issues is consistent and clear. Tariff wars and trade wars have no winners and do not serve the interests of either party. Both sides should negotiate and resolve relevant issues on the basis of equality, respect, and mutual benefit.

Bloomberg and Reuters believe that Trump's so-called "cooking oil" should be waste cooking oil, and the purpose of importing this product into the United States is to use it to manufacture biofuels. According to data from the US Department of Agriculture, in 2024, China's exports of waste edible oil to the US set a record of 1.27 million tons, accounting for 43% of China's total waste edible oil exports and worth $1.1 billion. But this year, the export volume of this product to the United States has dropped significantly, with a 65% drop in export volume in the first eight months, only about 290000 tons.

Bloomberg reported that Trump's remarks came at a time when American farmers were struggling with sluggish soybean sales. The US government had previously stated its intention to ease the pressure on soybean farmers through a package of aid, but the plan was hindered by the government shutdown. Many American soybean farmers also emphasize that they would rather reach a trade agreement with China than accept relief.

According to American media, the import of waste edible oil sparked discussions in the United States last year. Some analysts believe that it hinders the expansion of soybean crushing scale in the United States and replaces soybean oil as the main force in the biofuel field.

US expert Lv Xiang stated in an interview with Global Times on the 15th that biofuels are not the focus of the current US government's development, and their high cost still makes them an experimental industry. Regardless of the increase or decrease in import volume, their actual impact on the trade relationship between the two countries is relatively small. Lv Xiang added that relevant data shows that the export volume of waste edible oil from China to the United States has significantly decreased compared to the same period this year. In this context, it is almost meaningless to talk about this matter.
